Why do We Call Engine Power Horsepower?

Horsepower dates back to the advent of the steam engine. Years ago, everything was driven by horses, but everything changed with the invention of the steam engine by James Watt. He needed a convenient way to sell his engines, so he came up with the measurement of horsepower.

Watt worked extensively with ponies to see how much work each pony could do. He then estimated that a pony could pull 22,000 pounds of work in a minute, but he decided to increase that number to 33,000 pounds per minute.
